How to find a free camping place?
If it helped us it will probably help you, which is why we want to share this little something.
On our recent travels in France, we moved around a fair amount. On occasions, it was difficult to find a reasonable place to park up overnight between point A and B. As for most people, you ideally want a safe, quiet and if possible free place to pitch up. A scenic view is always a bonus but something we try to aim for. Avoiding designated camping spots will save you money, but it also means you lack the facilities. Not a problem if you can go off grid for a while and make do without them.
There is an app which we found one evening to make our lives much easier. Whilst hunting down places to park, we hit a dead end and turned to the app store to see if anything existed to show places to camp/park. One amazing app we found solved this problem whilst at the same time showing you scenic spots. It has the ability to show you thousands of places to park up. Some are designated camper van stops, and some are normal campsites. However, a lot of the advertised places are beautiful scenic hideaways that people have found and recommended for other van lifers. You can add your own if you know of any, but what makes this app even more helpful is the ability to check other people’s reviews and pictures before visiting. We found some lovely spots down some roads you would never think to drive down. The best thing of all, it was all free with some fantastic views. It really saved us on occasions when we struggled to find a place, and wanted to avoid being parked in a layby at the side of the road.
The app is called ‘Park4Night’ and is available for free on android and IOS devices. Go download it and let us know what you think. We will be using this on all future adventures for it ease and usefulness.
